  • Notes: * Admiral Sir James Saumarez took part in the Battle of St Vincent in 1797 and named his younger son John St Vincent in memory of this battle.
The name has since been given to other members of this branch of the family. Sir James Saumarez married in 1788 and his younger son John St Vincent Saumarez was born on 28th May 1806.
John St Vincent Saumarez joined the Rifle Brigade and rose to the rank of Colonel. He married Caroline Esher Rhodes in 1838, and died on 8th January 1891.
The sketches are very precise and are very reminiscent of the style taught by Army instructors of the time, as Officers were expected to be able to draw an accurate sketch of surrounding countryside, so that troops could determine the lay of the land if necessary, during times of war.
