Description:

Treaty of Roskilde - A rare map of Danish Islands etc - Depicting the Swedish King Carl Gustav and his army marching across the frozen sea to defeat the King of Denmark on February 6th 1658
the map showing the Danish Islands of Funen (Fyn), Aero, Alsen and Langeland, and bordering areas of Layland, Zeeland and Jutland, well framed and glazed, overall size 19½ x 21½in. (49.5 x 54.7cm.).
* Denmark had declared war in the summer of 1657 while the Swedish King and his army were in Poland. Carl Gustav swiftly marched towards Denmark and occupied the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig, and invaded Jylland (Jutland). After capturing the fortress at Frederiksodde in Jylland in October, Carl Gustav crossed the frozen Little Belt to the island Fyn (Funen) on January 30th. Fyn was easily taken, and from his headquarter in Odense, the King sent out patrols to investigate the ice between Fyn and Sjælland (Zealand). The ice proved to be solid between the islands Langeland south of Fyn and Lolland south of Sjælland. The King gathered his troops on Langeland, and on February 6th, the army crossed the Great Belt. A few days later, it arrived in Sjælland, taking the Danish king and army by surprise. In the Treaty of Roskilde (March 8th), Denmark was forced to cede Scania and other ancient Danish and Norwegian territories to Sweden.
