Description:

The Golden Globe awarded to the Hollywood actor Richard Burton CBE (1925-1984)
in 1953 for "Most Promising Newcomer" for his performance in the Hollywood movie "My Cousin Rachel" released in 1952, the stepped marble plinth bears a gilt brass plaque engraved ""To Richard Burton for the most promising newcomer (male) of 1952 in 'My Cousin Rachel' the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association", 9in. (23cm.) high.
**Provenance: Gift from Richard Burton to his brother Graham Jenkins who in the 1970's gave it to his great friend, the vendor's father.
* This was the first of three Golden Globes won by Richard Burton during his illustrious career. Born Richard Walter Jenkins in South Wales in 1925 he established himself as a hugely talented Shakespearean actor in the 1950s before cementing his reputation as a Hollywood star and one of the highest paid actors in the world. His turbulent relationship with his his fellow star, Elizabeth Taylor, to whom he was twice married, meant that the couple were rarely out of the news.

  • Condition: Good condition overall. Scratching to the marble plinth throughout and a chip to the back left corner, and some ingrained dirt to top surface around the foot of the globe. Some tarnish spotting to brass plaque. The globe has a dull gold painted finish - this may well have been later applied over the top of the original brighter gilt, probably due to gilt wear - the original gilt finish is just about visible in a few places.
