* Notes: John Humphrey Spender was a notable British painter, photographer, designer and teacher who was also the brother of the poet Humphrey Spender. In 1928 we went to Germany to study History of Art at Breisgau University, Freiberg. During this time he was exposed to the influence of continental European avant-garde photography. Becoming a member of the Mass Observation movement, Spender is particularly known for his photographs, pictures of daily life, and working-class communities. From 1928-34 he studies at the Architectural Association in London gaining his diploma. He regularly contributed illustrations to 'Picture Post', magazine and was appointed an official war photographer. After the war he did a variety of freelance work producing designs for textiles, carpets, wallpapers and murals winning the Council of Industrial Design award four times between 1956-76. He also taught at the Royal College of Art textile school. Spender had numerous solo exhibitions at the Redfern and Leicester Galleries in London and in 2002-2003 the National Portrait Gallery held an exhibition of his photographs of writers, artists and performers. elsewhere. His work is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery and elsewhere.
