Description:

Jersey interest - a George III pierced silver swing handled cake basket
William Plummer, London 1773, oval form, pierced with stylised swags and floral decoration, chain swing handle, the flared oval trellis foot with rope twist border, the interior with coat of arms, 13 1/2in. (34.3cm.) long, weight 22.4 tr.oz.
* Coat of arms - Engraved in contemporaneous style with the shield and crest of Sparke, formerly of Nantwich, Cheshire differenced by an annulet for a fifth son. Burke, Sir B (1884) General Armour, page 951 notes that the heiress of the Jersey branch of the family married John Payn of St Martin's Jersey. The Sparke arms are blazoned: A chequered Gold and green shield charged with an Ermine bend. Crest: A demi-panther rampant guardant rising from a ducal coronet. The salver's engraver was possibly a provincial craftsman unused to international heraldic convention. A heraldic panther is a mythological animal and the engraver has correctly depicted the varied colour spots that adorn its body but omitted the flames and fire that conventionally issue from its ears and mouth. On the shield the engraver has correctly represented the gold squares with dots but has represented the green squares with crossed diagonal lines instead of the conventional top-left to bottom-right shading.
** Marks good, a few tiny shallow dents to well, strong handle, very light surface wear, strong decoration and engraving, very good.
