Description:

George Henry Walton - an Arts & Crafts walnut framed high backed settee
c.1900-1910, the angular back and curved sides over a stuffover seat, in later sprigged pale gold upholstery, raised on square tapered legs with pottery castors, 71in. (180.5cm.) long, 31in. (78.5cm.) deep, 43in. (109.25cm.) high to back.
* This piece was designed by Walton for his important patron, George Davison. Davison patronised Walton for much of his life and it is believed that almost all of his possessions were designed by Walton, as well as several houses and their contents, including cutlery, glasses, carpets, wallpaper and fireplaces, as well as furnishings. Davison's patronage extended even beyond his death, his widow and second wife, Florence Annie commissioning Walton to design and build the 'Chapel of St. George' to house his ashes, in the grounds of their house in Cap d'Antibes, in the south of France. It was completed in 1932, just before Walton's death the following year.
** Provenance: George Davison and thence by family descent to the current owner, his granddaughter.
*** Literature: A photograph of George Davison's wife, Susanna Louisa, reclining on this settee, c.1910, is included in 'George Walton, Designer and Architect', by Karen Moon.
**** Condition: Has been reupholstered to a very good standard in the late 20th century, using period style horsehair and springs. The upholstery remains in good condition overall, but there is a stain mark to the right hand side of the seat. The frame has an old wax-filled split to the left hand corner of the back (see photo). There is an old shallow chip to the top outside edge of the left 'arm' and two smaller old chips to the back edge of the top rail. There is an old, 3in. long deep scratch to the top of the upright on the left arm. The right hand arm has wear/fading to the polish to the front of the top and an old chip to the front of the upright. The legs are secure, with the original matching castors. There is no evidence of repaired breaks. The arms move slightly but are secure.
