Five Chinese lacquered and parcel gilt carved wooden figures
probably 19th century, comprising two figures of seated dignitaries, the larger holding a sceptre, 13½in. (34.3cm.) high; the other with scratched inscription to the back, 'Col. W Shipsey 1931' and similar painted inscription to base, 8½in. (21.5cm.) high; together with a pair of similar figures of court attendants, 8in. (20.25cm.) high; and a seated figure of Guanyin, on a lotus flower stool, 6¾in. (17.1cm.) high. (5)

  • Condition: - Large seated figure: Old chip to lion mask on the right chair arm. Chipping and wear to gilt & lacquered decoration throughout and heavy surface dirt and dust. Heavy lacquer loss to back and right side of base. Large split to back of base and some old, inactive woodworm holes.
    - Smaller seated dignitary: Scratched inscription to back and split through front of base into the lower area of robe. Some wear to decoration throughout. A piece is missing from his right hand (he was originally holding something).
    - Pair attendants: Both with some wear and heavy dirt encrustation to decoration.One has small chip to edge of base and large paint flakes from lacquer to back of base.
    - Guanyin: Large split to back of base and two smaller splits towards front of base. Some wear to decoration, especially the gilt, and some lacquer flaking.

Although there are no major restrictions concerning the exportation of any works of art or antiquities being offered in this Guernsey auction, buyers are obviously responsible for the proper importation of their purchases into their country of destination.
