Description:

Edmund Blampied RBA, RE (1886-1966)
"Driving Home in the Rain", proof etching on thin wove paper, signed in sepia ink lower centre, signed in the plate upper centre, edition of 40, etched in 1914, framed, 18.5 x 26cm. *Catalogue Raisonée Appleby & Arnold No.35. According to Campbell Dodgson, the plate was destroyed in 1920. Driving Home in the Rain is widely considered to be the finest of all Blampied's etchings. **Provenance: Given to the vendor in the 1970's by Dorothy Hart of Villa Millbrook, St Lawrence Jersey. Dorothy Hart was the widow of the financier Geoffrey Hart and moved to Villa Millbrook in the early 1960s, the house forming the perfect backdrop for probably the finest collection of art and antiques in the Channel Islands. The Harts had started their collection before the war at Wych Place, Sussex and Dorothy continued collecting after her husband's death in 1946, moving to their London home at 9, Hyde Park Gardens and later to Jersey.

  • Condition: *Sheet lightly cockled to the right edge commensurate with the character of the sheet of thin wove paper, possibly Japan paper, selected by the artist for its individual qualities to experiment as a proof. Also fractures in the paper along the right edge. There is light foxing and a band of discolouration outside the plate mark left by the acidic mount.
