David Foggie RSA, RSW, (Scottish, 1878-1948)
Portrait of William Boyd (1873-1941), oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated 1912, original Whistler gilt frame, 23 1/2 x 19 1/2in. (59.7 x 49.5cm.). Together with a collection of photographs and cuttings relating to the sitter including a b/w photograph of William Boyd with Queen Mary and a b/w photograph of crowds outside the factory of James Keiller & Sons dated July 1914 on the occasion of the visit of Queen Mary to the factory, mounted together in one frame, also a letter to William Boyd dated 14th October 1931 from Glamis Castle from Cecilia Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, mother of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Also a bronze bust of William Boyd on a green marble base, 12in. (30.5cm.) high.

    Condition:
  • *William Boyd (1873-1941) was Managing Director of James Keiller & Sons, famous for Keiller's marmalade, and at the time a highly successful company based in Dundee and London and exporting around the world. William Boyd was a serious art collector who in the 1910's began buying the work of William McTaggart and the Scottish Colourists and upon retiring in 1920 started investing in modern French art. His collection included works by Matisse, Rodin, Sisley, Vuillard, Bonnard and de Segonzac and he owned more more works by Van Gogh than any other Scottish collector.

Although there are no major restrictions concerning the exportation of any works of art or antiquities being offered in this Guernsey auction, buyers are obviously responsible for the proper importation of their purchases into their country of destination. Your attention is directed to the CITES regulations in your country and no items subject to CITES can leave Guernsey without a CITES certificate. No ivory items can be sent to the USA.
