Description:

An exceptional and important North Italian or South German carved ivory, parcel gilt and polychrome painted marriage casket
late 18th / early 19th century, of rectangular sarcophagus form with polychrome painted foliate and floral borders, repeated to the interior with painted female nude figures and a painted armorial to the top centre, the hinged lid with smaller rectangular box with hinged cover and pierced silver metal hinges, surmounted by a recumbent female nude, the sides relief carved with putti, a goat and dogs, the main lid finely carved with scrolling flowering foliage, winged angels, green man masks and two classical busts, within an acanthus border, against a gilt painted ground, the sides with panels finely carved with scenes of Amazons and Greek warriors in battle, within egg and dart borders and with figures of Swiss guards to the angles, the lower plinth with carved gadrooning and painted Green keyed border, raised on four winged law feet, painted to the underside with polychrome green man masks, 9 5/8 x 7in. (24.5 x 17.75cm.), 10in. (25.5cm.) high.
* Condition: In exceptionally original condition overall. The only significant fault is that the head of the nude figure to the lid has been off and restored. Tiny chips to the tips of the end-most leaves on three corners of the inner carved section of the main lid, and one of these leaf tips is an old replacement. Old horizontal crack to the right hand side panel of the lid, through the top of the green man mask. One of the hinges on the main lid is broken (it has sheared off at the hinge) and the other hinge is bent upwards a little - there is a small chip to the ivory top edge on the back of the casket, just below the hinge. The carved panels and main base section of the casket has no damage whatsoever to the carving and is in fine condition. The feet have evidence of old glued repairs to reseat them, which is not unexpected with the age of the piece. They are not damaged however. There is some wear to the polychrome painted and parcel gilt decoration, mainly to the edges and more notably to the top of the smaller box to the top of the lid. There is also wear to the painting to the front centre underside of the lid from placement of a finger to lift. Lacks key and turned button from catch on front of upper box.

*** UK BUYERS - PLEASE NOTE: Our buyer's premium is 17.5% of the hammer price, with no VAT payable on the premium. However, as Guernsey is outside the EU, all items (excluding books) will be liable to import VAT if imported into the UK, at the reduced rate of 5% for antiques. Please factor this in to your bid. The 5% will be liable on the full invoice cost, including the buyer's premium, the fee for live bidding if applicable and any other charges. The Import VAT fee will be added to your auction invoice automatically if you are in the UK. This will allow us to pay the VAT due to UK customs upon import, clearing customs swiftly and with no additional administration fees from UK Customs. *** PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NO LONGER POST ANY ITEMS TO UK BUYERS FROM GUERNSEY *** - this is because Guernsey Post do not have the reduced 5% Import VAT rate in their systems - if we post from Guernsey, we must charge Import VAT at the full 20% rate. Therefore, we now send all items purchased by UK buyers to Mail Boxes Etc. in Portsmouth, who will then deal with and charge for onward shipping from there. Shipment from Guernsey to Mail Boxes for all items (excluding furniture and oversized items) is charged at £5 per lot. They are a very good Mail Boxes franchise and their charges are reasonable. If you wish to collect the goods yourself (or via an appointed third party) from Guernsey, please let us know within seven days of the sale, so that we can ensure that your purchase is not sent to Mail Boxes and so that the Import VAT can be removed from your invoice before payment.

For information regarding shipping of larger items such as furniture, longcase clocks etc. (which are too large to be handled by Mail Boxes Etc.), please contact us.

*** International Buyers: Should you be successful with your bidding we would be pleased to make arrangements for your purchased lot(s) to be shipped to various destinations. Small items weighing under 2kg may be able to be posted directly by Martel Maides Auctions from Guernsey, at our discretion and depending upon destination and value. For further information please contact James Bridges or Jason Yendell on +44 (0)1481 722700, who will be pleased to assist.
