Lot 167
A Regency silver cover London 1812, maker Paul Storr, of dome form, the cast handle with twin lion masks and leaves above two gadrooned rims, the sides engraved with a resting stag crest and armorial, 9in 23cm diameter, weight 35oz. In 1808 22 year old Captain James Deans RN, son of Dr James Deans of Calcutta, ratified his own family arms and married his first cousin, Janet Dundas. Her mother was Anne Whitely and her father Charles Dundas of Kintbury was MP for Berkshire and was created baron Amesbury in 1832, but lived only two further months. On marriage Captain Deans took the surname Deans- Dundas and quartered the arms 1 + 4, Dundas. 2, Whitely. 3, Deans. These are the arms in the right hand half of the coat-of -arms. By their marriage James Whitely Deans-Dundas, subsequently Admiral Sir J. W.D. Dundas G.C.B. (Knight Grand Cross of the order of Bath), and his wife had two sons and three (as yet untraced) daughters. The engraved arms are those for the marriage of one of those daughters, perhaps to a man named Arbalaste of a Genovese family, or to a Briton named Sacheville whose blue shield was charged with three crossbows.
