Description:

A rare mid 19th century gilt brass strut clock
very much in the manner of Thomas Cole, the silvered dial profusely engraved with foliage, with Roman chapter ring and blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, the centre engraved with an urn overflowing with fruit within a floral garland above a fixed date calendar with key day adjuster, all within a scrolling foliate engraved gilt frame, the backplate with folding winding handles and shutter to the escapement and engraved by the retailer 'C.F. Hancock, By Appointment to Principle Sovereigns and Courts of Europe 39 Bruton St. Bond St. London', number 875, with easel stand and shaped swivel base, folding suspension loop to top, 5 1/4in. (13.25cm.) high.
* Thomas Cole was born in Somerset in 1800, the son of a clockmaker. Cole moved to London in the early 1820's but was not working independently until about 1838. By 1845 Cole was calling himself a 'designer and maker of ornamental clocks' and exhibited as such at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He is justly famous for high quality clocks of individual design, always with fine engraving.
** Neither the movement nor the case is stamped 'Thomas Cole' but the design, the engraving and the serial number all indicate that this timepiece can be attributed to him with confidence.

*** UK BUYERS - PLEASE NOTE: Our buyer's premium is 15% of the hammer price, with no VAT payable on the premium. However, as we are outside the EU, the item will be liable to import VAT if imported into the UK, at the reduced rate of 5% for antiques. Please factor this in to your bid. The 5% will be liable on the full invoice cost, including buyer's premium. We highly recommend that the import VAT is paid as part of your auction invoice. This will allow us to pay the VAT due to UK customs upon import, clearing customs swiftly and with no additional administration fees from UK Customs. Due to the inability of Guernsey Post to cope with the reduced 5% Import VAT rate in their systems, we now send all items purchased by UK buyers to Mailboxes in Portsmouth, who will then deal with onward shipping from there. They are a very good Mailboxes franchise and their charges are reasonable. If you wish to collect the goods yourself, please let us know within three working days of the sale so that we can remove the Import VAT from your invoice before payment.
