Description:

A late 18th or early 19th century Spode pearlware blue and white transfer printed Bourdalou
impressed factory mark and ''M'' to base, Princess Adelaide pattern, boat form with c-scroll handle with lip thumbpiece, shallow ovoid foot, 9 1/4in. (23.5cm.) long.
* This type of shaped chamber pot was named after the French Jesuit priest Father Bourdalou, who, at the time of Louis XIV, preached such interminably long sermons that ladies began to bring these pots into church concealed in their muffs, so that they could be secretly used in emergency under their wide dresses.
