A large Anglo-Indian silver metal mounted engraved ivory writing and work box, Vizagapatam, early 19th century
decorated with engraved borders depicting seated figures in gardens, birds and figures rowing a boat, with similar huntsmen to the angles, bordered by bands of foliage and feathers and the upper tier of the lid with ribbon tied swags, the rectangular stepped and gadrooned hinged upper lid enclosing a fitted sandalwood interior, the underside of the lid with a hidden compartment with inset engraved ivory oval depicting ships off an island coast, the main lid with waisted sides and hinged to reveal a fitted interior with lidded compartments and pin cushions, a mirror inside lid, above a long drawer revealing a hinged writing slope, the sides with swing handles on silver metal oval mask medallions, raised on silver metal winged paw feet, 13 1/4 x 10 3/4in. (33.75 x 26.5cm.), 11 1/2in. (29.25cm.) high.
* Condition: Small chip to corner of finial and finial has some old glue residue around the joint with lid. Crack across one side of gadrooned top to upper lid and a few old ivory pinned repairs to the gadrooning. Two small replaced sections to corners of the foliate edge banding to upper lid. Small soldered repair to one hinge on upper lid. Small replaced piece of engraved ivory to front left corner of main lid, small bruise to front edge, and old repaired split and wear to engraved decoration to centre back edge of main lid. Main lid is detached along back edge, leaving the back edge section attached to the base and hinges. Two screws fixing ivory strip along sides of mirror are replacements. Interior complete. Lock to main lid lacks key. Key is present for slope drawer and lock is working. Small chip, crack and tiny glued repair to gadrooned side to back right of base. Two pieces of ivory veneer have glued repair to front right corner of base. Filled pinned repairs to both angled sections of ivory veneer to lower sides. Old hairline cracks to ivory throughout, commensurate with age.
