A fine pair of 25 bore Spanish holster pistols by Valentin Lopez, Madrid, Circa 1795, converted to percussion by Aquilino Aparicio
Circa 1820, with blued barrels formed in three stages, moulded at the muzzles, chiselled girdles, signed 'Valentin Lopez' in gold with gold lined makers marks and inlaid with scrolls of gold foliage at the breeches, border and scroll engraved burnished steel breech tangs signed 'Aparicio', rounded locks signed 'Valentin Lopez Madrid' with horizontal sears engaging the hammers, stained full stocks with raised mouldings over the fore-ends and behind the tangs, steel mounts comprising broad trigger-guards with foliate decoration and signed 'Valentin Lopez en Madrid', spurred pommels decorated with olive and laurel foliage, moulded rear ramrod-pipes and fore-end ramrod pipes forming the barrel bands, contemporary ramrods, possibly original, 10 7/8in. (27.5cm.) barrels.(2) FIRING MECHANISM TAKEN OUT FOR STORAGE BUT PRESENT.
*Valentin Lopez and Aquilino Aparicio were active in Madrid circa 1795-1826 and 1795-1830 respectively. Aparicio trained under Carlos Montargis, See J. Lavin 1965, p.119.
