Description:

A fine early 19th century 15ct gold, silver, silver gilt and diamond tiara
with a graduation of three ribbon tied floral cartouches, set in silver on 15ct gold with a variety of old cut diamonds, estimated approx. total weight 12.8ct, the three elements detachable and wearable as brooches or pendants, the central element 4.7 x 3.5cm., internal diameter of frame 10.7cm.
* This tiara has been in the possession of the Spies von Büllesheim family since it was originally commissioned c.1810-1820. The family's ancestral home was Haus Hall in Ratheim, district of Heinsberg, in North Rhine-Westphalia.

  • Condition: The tiara is in good condition overall. The diamonds do have some with small inclusions visible, mainly to the edges of the stones. The principal stones have a few small inclusions, mainly tiny carbon spots. They are relatively white overall, but as they are enclosed at the back and there is dirt behind many of the stones, it is not easy to asses their colour. They actually have more ‘grey' to them than yellow, which may be due to the silver backing. There is one noticeably yellow stone above right of the largest centre stone – this is yellow because it has become detached at some time due to wear to the claws, and has been glued back in place, causing the yellow tint. The same is the case for three or four of the very small stones to the outer borders, which have been glued in place in the past after becoming detached. The centre ‘brooch' element is missing the brooch pin from the back. The assessment of the carat weight of the diamonds (12.80 carats) was carried out by a professional jeweller in Jersey, named Barringtons. The tiara weighs 43.8 grams
