Utagawa Kunisada I (also known as Toyokuni III) (Japanese, 1786-1865)
a good collection of oban size woodblock prints, including a triptych of a kabuki scene, depicting a salesman showing his wares to a wealthy man and his wife; a diptych, from the Okazaki Station from the series 'Tokaido Gojusan Tsugi' (53 Stations of the Tokaido); a diptych from the series 'Ruzoku Gogya Zutsushi no Uchi' of two kabuki play characters, all dated 1852; plus a pair, mounted as a diptych, depicting the actor Danjuro playing the Samurai Juro Unari and Iwai Sojaku playing a Geisha, 1860s; an 1860s print of a Tonosama watching his Samurai painting a screen; an 1850s print from the series 'Chushingura E-Kyodai'; a print of a Samurai holding an umbrella; and a print of a kabuki scene, all visible image approx. 13½ x 9¼in. (34.3 x 23.5cm.), all with strong colours, matted, unframed; together with an oban print by Chikanobu, c.1890, of an elegant lady amidst cherry blossoms, and three others, two mounted as a diptych.   • Condition: Not examined out of mounts, sixteen of which are cellophane wrapped. The Kunisada prints appear to be strong impressions overall, with bold colours and no faults to the visible area of the print. A few minor fox marks to the triptych. Overall in very good condition. The Chikanobu print and the diptych matted as a pair are in good condition with strong colours. The print of the woman and child observing carp from a bridge has been trimmed to 35.5 x 23.5cm.) and has some fox marks at upper left. Lightly toned.
