Description:

John Hayes (British, 1786-1866), after Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825)
The Emperor Napoleon [Bonaparte] in his study at the Tuileries
oil on canvas with old relining, signed 'J. Hayes' and also inscribed 'David' to stretcher verso, in a good English, late 18th century, Carlo Maratta frame
49 x 39in. (124.5 x 99cm.)
* Notes: This portrait of Napoleon is based on the much less well known second version of David's portrait of Napoleon in his Study at the Tuileries. The first version was commissioned by the 10th Duke of Hamilton in 1811 and was completed in 1812. It is in the National Gallery, Washington and there are other copies both by David himself, his studio and numerous followers. The second version differs from the first mainly due to Napoleon wearing a different uniform, very dark green facing to the jacket as opposed to white and a wide red collar and silver as opposed to gilt buttons.
The second version was painted by David in April 1812 and remained in the artist's family until 1860, when it was acquired by the Second Empire Ministere de la Maison de L'Empereur for the Tuileries. A legal dispute led to the picture being returned to Empress Eugenie in 1880 and it then remained with the family until 1979 when it was acquired by the French state for Versailles.
