Description:

An antique diamond and sapphire plaque ring
featuring an inky blue cabochon sapphire to the centre, surrounded by an oval plaque inlaid with round, brilliant cut diamonds. Ring size J.
Condition: The sapphire measures 11 x 6.5mm. approx. The top of the sapphire has some miniscule pits and tiny scratches to the surface - these are visible to the naked eye as a very slight 'matting' to the shine on the top of the cabochon. There is also one larger (approx. 1.5mm) old surface scratch to the sapphire just off the top to one side - it is not particularly deep and is old so the edges are worn, but it can just about be felt with a fingernail. With a light shone from underneath the stone, some clear natural dark & light contrasting striations can be seen low down on one side just above the setting, along with a patch of silvery inclusions - this patch of inclusions are also visible from underneath with a light shone through the top of the stone. When worn, these inclusions are not visible. The diamonds all appear to be original - one of the larger side ones at one end has a small chip to the girdle (which is beneath a claw and was therefore presumably caused pre-mounting). That same stone also has two small chips to the edge of the table - one is very sharp and may in fact be an inaccurate cut from during the cutting. Our approximation is that the diamonds weigh approx. 0.5ct total. The millegrain setting is in good condition, with some wear as expected at either end. On the shoulders, one of the central 'leaf' pieces stretching from the millegrain edge to the shoulder has been off and has been reattached with tiny spots of clear glue). It seems secure but obviously it would be preferable to have a soldered repair. The shank does not appear to have been sized. There are no hallmarks. The metal tests as platinum of an electronic tester. We believe that the ring dates from the 1930s.

*** UK BUYERS - PLEASE NOTE: Our buyer's premium is 17.5% of the hammer price, with no VAT payable on the premium. However, as Guernsey is outside the EU, all items (excluding books) will be liable to import VAT if imported into the UK, at the reduced rate of 5% for antiques. Please factor this in to your bid. The 5% will be liable on the full invoice cost, including the buyer's premium, the fee for live bidding if applicable and any other charges. The Import VAT fee will be added to your auction invoice automatically if you are in the UK. This will allow us to pay the VAT due to UK customs upon import, clearing customs swiftly and with no additional administration fees from UK Customs. *** PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NO LONGER POST ANY ITEMS TO UK BUYERS FROM GUERNSEY *** - this is because Guernsey Post do not have the reduced 5% Import VAT rate in their systems - if we post from Guernsey, we must charge Import VAT at the full 20% rate. Therefore, we now send all items purchased by UK buyers to Mail Boxes Etc. in Portsmouth, who will then deal with and charge for onward shipping from there. Shipment from Guernsey to Mail Boxes for all items (excluding furniture and oversized items) is charged at £5 per lot. They are a very good Mail Boxes franchise and their charges are reasonable. If you wish to collect the goods yourself (or via an appointed third party) from Guernsey, please let us know within seven days of the sale, so that we can ensure that your purchase is not sent to Mail Boxes and so that the Import VAT can be removed from your invoice before payment.

For information regarding shipping of larger items such as furniture, longcase clocks etc. (which are too large to be handled by Mail Boxes Etc.), please contact us.

*** International Buyers: Should you be successful with your bidding we would be pleased to make arrangements for your purchased lot(s) to be shipped to various destinations. Small items weighing under 2kg may be able to be posted directly by Martel Maides Auctions from Guernsey, at our discretion and depending upon destination and value. For further information please contact James Bridges or Jason Yendell on +44 (0)1481 722700, who will be pleased to assist.
