Description:

A fine George IV silver oval soup tureen and cover
William Bateman, London 1823, the lobed body applied to either side with identical coats of arms within floral and foliate cartouches, the twin foliate and shell capped reeded handles issuing from well modelled lion masks, the domed lobed cover with conforming handle, gadrooned rim and engraved armorial, the whole raised on substantial paw supports with spreading foliate mounts, 17 1/2in. (44.5cm.) long, 10 1/2in. (26.5cm.) high, weight 146oz.
* The applied arms are those of the Richardson family of Field House, Whitby, Yorkshire. Purchased: Sotheby's, lot 60, 6th March 1969, hammer price £1,650.
