Sale F90003 Lot 4

An 18th century Channel Islands silver christening cup with rare duty drawback mark
maker's mark ID overstruck over London hallmarks three times to base (Jean Pierre du Port, Guernsey fl. c.1779-1788), also with intaglio king's head and Britannia duty drawback marks to base, of typical form, with cast beaded S-scroll handles and short, waisted foot, inscribed 'CTR' to side, 2 7/8in. (7.5cm.) high, weight 3.0 tr.oz.
* Approx. 20 Guernsey christening cups with the duty drawback mark are known. Although bearing overstruck London marks, they are believed to have been made in Guernsey and later sent to England where the London marks were added and then overstruck with Guernsey marks on their return.
